An Ontario Notary Public verifies identity and watches the signer sign in person, then records the act with a signature and seal. Eligible affidavits and declarations use a separate remote-commissioning service under O. Reg. 431/20.
This service must be completed in person. You can book a mobile visit online and have the notary come to your home, hospital, care residence, or office in the Ottawa area. Office appointments are still available by phone.

Why Do You Need Signature Notarization?
A receiving body may ask for a witnessed or notarized signature as evidence of who signed and when.
Follow its current instructions for the type of witness and notarial wording. If it instead asks for an affidavit or statutory declaration, confirm whether remote commissioning is accepted. The notary does not verify the document’s facts, decide whether it is legally effective, or advise whether you should sign.
What is notarizing signatures?
Signature notarization records an in-person witnessed signing.
The Notary Public verifies the signer’s identity using valid government-issued photo identification, watches the signer sign, and applies the appropriate notarial wording, signature, and seal. Minute Notary performs this Notaries Act service at the Ottawa office or by mobile visit. Eligible affidavits and statutory declarations may instead be commissioned remotely under O. Reg. 431/20. Neither act validates the document’s contents, makes an agreement enforceable, or replaces legal advice.

Attend the office or mobile appointment with the document complete but unsigned. Each signer whose signature will be witnessed must attend in person.

Don't Sign Before Your Visit
The most common mistake is signing before coming to the notary. Documents MUST be signed in the notary's presence. Bring them completely unsigned.
All Parties Must Attend
Every signature being notarized must be made in person before the notary. Separate office or mobile appointments may be possible if the document and receiving body permit them.
Complete Documents Only
Ensure your document is complete with no blank spaces to be filled in later. Notaries cannot notarize incomplete documents.
