Bring the original to an in-person office or mobile appointment. An Ontario Notary Public compares it with the copy, then signs and seals the certification. Confirm the receiving body accepts a certified copy.
This service must be completed in person. You can book a mobile visit online and have the notary come to your home, hospital, care residence, or office in the Ottawa area. Office appointments are still available by phone.
Quick answer
Certified Copies must be handled in person — it cannot be completed over an online video appointment. The rate is $24.95 per seal + HST. You can book a mobile visit online; a $60 travel fee is charged once per trip, or call (613) 434-5555 for an office appointment. Most appointments take 10-15 minutes.
A certified true copy is a photocopy that a Notary Public has compared with the original document shown at a physical appointment. The notary then adds a certification statement, signature, date, and seal. The certification confirms that the copy matches the original presented; it does not confirm the original's validity or require a receiving body to accept it. Follow the receiving organization's current instructions for acceptable certifiers, wording, page treatment, and any authentication or apostille step.

Why it matters
A receiving organization may ask for a certified true copy when it needs confirmation that a photocopy matches an original. Requirements differ by program and receiver. Check the current instructions before booking, and bring them with the original so the certification can use any required wording.
