Book an appointment, bring your document, and we witness your signature and apply the seal.
OSAP verifies reported income against Canada Revenue Agency records. If you lived abroad before arriving in Canada, there are no CRA records to check. This sworn affidavit fills that gap by declaring what you earned (or did not earn) outside the Canadian tax system so your financial aid office can calculate your funding accurately.
Even if you had zero income before coming to Canada, the affidavit is still required. The financial aid office needs a formal declaration under oath confirming that fact.
Your financial aid office will request this document in situations where your income history cannot be verified through the CRA.
The affidavit gathers your personal details and the facts about your pre-arrival or non-taxable income situation.
Once you have filled in the template, you must swear or affirm it in front of a notary public or commissioner for taking affidavits. At the appointment, the notary checks your government-issued photo ID, confirms you understand you are making a statement under oath, watches you sign, and completes the jurat (the clause recording where, when, and before whom the oath was taken).
Virtual commissioning is available under Ontario Regulation 431/20, provided both you and the commissioner are located in Ontario during the video call. The fee at Minute Notary is a flat $19.90 per stamp.
Have the following ready before your in-person or virtual swearing appointment.
OSAP documents are typically due 40 days before your study period ends. Micro-credential students have 5 days after their study period ends. Check with your financial aid office for exact dates, as schools may set earlier internal deadlines.
Swearing a false affidavit is perjury under section 131 of the Criminal Code of Canada, an indictable offence carrying up to 14 years' imprisonment. A false declaration can also result in loss of OSAP funding and repayment obligations. Confirm every detail before you sign.
