An affidavit of financial support for education is a sworn legal statement in which a sponsor declares under oath that they will fund a student's tuition, living expenses, or both for a specified period. It carries the full weight of sworn evidence under Canadian law, meaning a false statement constitutes perjury under section 131 of the Criminal Code.
The document names the sponsor and student, identifies the educational institution and program of study, and sets out the financial commitment. It is not a contract between sponsor and student; it is evidence directed at the institution or government body requesting proof of adequate funding.
Several common situations in Ontario require a notarized statement of financial support. If any of the following apply to you, this is likely the document you need.
The affidavit collects specific details about both the sponsor and the student so the receiving institution can verify the commitment. Have the following ready before your appointment.
The notary commissions the affidavit itself; they do not verify your bank balance or employment status. However, coming prepared ensures the process is smooth and the information you swear to is accurate.
Commissioning is the formal process by which a notary public or commissioner for taking affidavits makes your statement legally binding. The notary verifies your identity using photo ID, then administers an oath (sworn on a religious text) or an affirmation (a secular equivalent with the same legal force). You sign the affidavit while the notary watches, and they complete the jurat recording the date, location, and their commission details, then apply their seal.
The entire appointment takes roughly 10 to 15 minutes. Virtual commissioning is available under Ontario Regulation 431/20, provided both you and the notary are physically located in Ontario during the session. Notarization at our office is a flat $19.90 per stamp.
If the sponsor lives abroad, they can have the affidavit commissioned by a notary in their own jurisdiction or at a Canadian embassy or consulate. IRCC accepts affidavits commissioned in foreign jurisdictions provided they meet that country's legal requirements for sworn documents. If the sponsor happens to be visiting Ontario, they can attend a local appointment here instead.
Regardless of where the affidavit is sworn, the student should confirm with their institution or IRCC exactly which supporting financial documents (bank letters, employment records, tax filings) must accompany it.
