What is a declaration of financial support?
A declaration of financial support — also called an affidavit of support, sponsorship declaration, or undertaking of support — confirms under oath that you accept responsibility for supporting a named person, often including accommodation and living costs.
It reassures an institution or authority that the person will not lack the means to meet their needs while in Canada or during their studies.

When you might need one
It is used wherever someone must show they will be financially supported.
- Supporting a relative’s visitor visa or super visa application.
- Confirming support for a student’s study permit or enrolment.
- Backing a family sponsorship or undertaking.
- Showing a host will cover accommodation and living costs.

What to include
Identify yourself and the person you will support, your relationship, and the nature and period of the support you are committing to. Be ready to provide supporting documents such as proof of income or employment if the authority requests them.
Requirements differ by program, so confirm what the receiving authority expects before you rely on the declaration.

How to notarize a declaration of financial support in Ontario
After you fill in your declaration of financial support and download the PDF, do not sign it in advance. A sworn document must be signed in front of a notary public or commissioner for taking affidavits, who administers your oath or solemn affirmation first.
