How it works

Prepare your document, one step at a time.

Answer the questions, choose the download you need, then continue with signing or booking.

  1. 01

    What the seller hands over

With the bill of sale, the seller gives the buyer the vehicle portion of the permit with the Application for Transfer signed, and the Used Vehicle Information Package. Ontario makes it an offence for a seller not to provide the package for a motorcycle.

The buyer needs a Safety Standards Certificate to put plates on the motorcycle; a transfer to a spouse is exempt. A moped needs neither the package nor a safety certificate.

  2. 02

    Registering a used motorcycle

The buyer registers the motorcycle at ServiceOntario within six days of the sale. Before you pay, Ontario suggests a lien search on the Personal Property Security Registration system, and the Used Vehicle Information Package lists liens too.

  3. 03

Sales tax on a used motorcycle

A motorcycle bought privately is subject to 13% retail sales tax, paid when you register it. Unlike a car, a motorcycle is taxed on the purchase price, not a Red Book value. Buy from a dealer that charges HST and you pay the HST to the dealer instead.

A gift to a close family member, such as a spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or grandchild, can be exempt with Form 1157E, the Sworn Statement for a Family Gift. The donor and the recipient both swear it before a commissioner, and it can be commissioned online by video. One exempt transfer is allowed per vehicle every 12 months.

  4. 04

Notarizing a motorcycle bill of sale

ServiceOntario accepts a handwritten bill of sale and does not ask for it to be notarized.

If the buyer, the seller or a lender wants it sworn, leave the PDF unsigned: it ends with a solemn declaration that a commissioner can take online by video, under Ontario's remote commissioning rules (O. Reg. 431/20).

If you want a notary to witness the signatures instead, that is done in person, on a mobile visit where the notary comes to you anywhere in Ontario. Bring valid government-issued photo identification either way.
