What is a snowmobile bill of sale?

A snowmobile bill of sale is the written record of a snowmobile changing hands. It names the seller and the buyer, states the price and the date, and identifies the snowmobile by its make, model, year, colour and VIN, so both sides can prove what was sold, to whom and for how much.

In Ontario the buyer needs it to put the registration in their own name, and on a private sale the price it shows is the amount the buyer pays sales tax on.

  2. 02

Transferring a used snowmobile in Ontario

A snowmobile must be registered with the Ministry of Transportation, through ServiceOntario, before it is driven. To transfer a snowmobile that is already registered, the buyer needs the snow-vehicle permit signed by the seller and the bill of sale. Under the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act, the seller and the buyer must each send the ministry notice of the sale within six days.

Once registered, the buyer receives a permit and a registration number decal. To ride anywhere other than their own property, the buyer also needs a validation sticker on the decal, unless they are an exempt resident of northern Ontario, and liability insurance.

  3. 03

Sales tax on a used snowmobile

A snowmobile bought privately, from a seller who is not registered for GST/HST, is subject to 13% Ontario retail sales tax. The buyer pays it when registering the snowmobile at ServiceOntario. Unlike a used car, the tax is based on the price paid, not on a Red Book value. For the tax, the price includes the value of anything the seller accepted in exchange, such as a trade-in, so record that too.

A snowmobile bought from a dealer or business that charges HST carries no separate retail sales tax. A gift to a close family member can be exempt with the Sworn Statement for a Family Gift (Form 1157E).

  4. 04

    What to include

Copy the details exactly as they appear on the snow-vehicle permit.

    • The seller's and the buyer's full names and addresses.
    • The make, model, model year, colour and VIN or serial number.
    • The registration number from the permit, if the snowmobile is registered.
    • The price, how it was paid, and the date of sale.
    • If the seller is registered for GST/HST, the registration number and the HST collected on top of the price.
    • Anything else included, such as a cover or spare parts.

How to notarize a snowmobile bill of sale in Ontario

Ontario's transfer steps ask for the snow-vehicle permit signed by the seller and the bill of sale; they do not mention notarization. If a party wants the statement sworn, leave the PDF unsigned: the template ends with a solemn declaration that a commissioner can take online by secure video, under Ontario's remote commissioning rules (O. Reg. 431/20).

If you want a notary to witness the signatures instead, that is done in person, on a mobile visit where the notary comes to you anywhere in Ontario. Bring valid government-issued photo identification either way.

Frequently asked

Questions about the Snowmobile Bill of Sale (Ontario)

01
Do I need a bill of sale to transfer a snowmobile in Ontario?
Yes. To transfer a used snowmobile that is already registered, the buyer brings the snow-vehicle permit signed by the seller and the bill of sale to ServiceOntario.

Six days. The Motorized Snow Vehicles Act requires both the seller and the buyer to send the Ministry of Transportation notice of the sale within six days of it.
03
Do I pay sales tax on a used snowmobile in Ontario?
On a private sale, yes: the buyer pays 13% retail sales tax on the purchase price when registering the snowmobile. If you buy from a dealer that charges HST, you pay the HST to the dealer instead.
