What is brazilian visa authorization for a minor?

Citizens of Canada, the United States and Australia have needed an electronic visa to travel to Brazil since 10 April 2025, applied for on the Brazilian government’s official portal run by VFS Global.

Applicants who live in Ottawa or Gatineau and hold another nationality apply instead through the Consular Section of the Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa. Both routes ask for something extra when the applicant is a child: an authorization for the issuance of the visa, signed by the parents or legal guardians, together with a document proving the relationship — the child’s long-form birth certificate, or a death certificate, or a court order granting sole custody. Why a Child’s Brazilian Visa File Needs This

A consulate issuing a visa to a child wants proof that the people responsible for that child agreed to it. The Embassy of Brazil in Ottawa publishes the requirement plainly for applicants under 18: an authorization signed by both parents or legal guardians, plus a document proving the relationship.

The Government of Canada’s own Brazil travel advice points the same way, telling travellers to contact the nearest Brazilian government office for guidance on submitting a minor’s visa application. Notarizing the authorization is what turns a family’s signature into something the consular officer can rely on — the notary confirms identity and takes the declaration, and records it under seal.

    Confirm Which Document Is Asked For

    Check whether the consulate or the visa portal wants the authorization for issuance of the visa, a general travel consent letter, or the separate travel authorization a Brazilian child needs to leave Brazil. They are different documents. Tell us which one and we prepare that one.

    Complete the Authorization, Leave It Unsigned

    Fill in the child’s details and the parents’ details using the wording the receiver gave you, if they publish a template. Do not sign it — the notary takes the declaration at the appointment.

    Every Declaring Parent Attends With ID

    Each parent or legal guardian whose consent the file needs joins the appointment and shows valid government-issued photo ID. If only one parent will declare, bring the death certificate or sole-custody order that explains why.

    Declaration and Commissioning

    The notary adds the declaration wording and the O. Reg. 431/20 jurat, takes each parent’s declaration, then signs and seals. Each parent who declares is a separate notarial act.

    Receive the Sealed Document

    You get the sealed PDF to upload with the visa application, or the wet-ink original if the receiver asked for paper or you are going on to an apostille.

    Spell the Names the Way the Passport Does

    Middle names, accents and hyphens on the authorization should match the child’s passport exactly. A mismatch between the authorization and the passport is the easiest way to have a file sent back.

  2. 02

    Both Parents, or the Paperwork That Explains Why Not

    The published checklist asks for both parents or legal guardians. One signature on its own tends to be queried unless the death certificate or the sole-custody order travels with it.

  3. 03

    Ask About an Apostille Before You Book

    An apostille is a separate step after notarization and it needs a wet-ink document, which means an in-person appointment. If the receiver wants one, tell us before booking so we start you on the right appointment.

  4. 04

    Do Not Confuse It With the Travel Authorization

    The authorization for issuance of a visa supports the visa APPLICATION. The travel authorization Brazil requires for a Brazilian child leaving Brazil is a different document with different rules. Ask the receiver which one they mean.

An authorization signed in front of a notary is a witnessed signature, and under s. 3(3) of the Notaries Act that happens in person. It is eligible for a remote appointment only when it is prepared as a statutory declaration, which the notary commissions under O. Reg. 431/20. Whether the consulate or the visa portal accepts a remotely commissioned declaration for your file is their decision — confirm it before booking. The notary does not complete the visa application, choose your supporting documents, or give immigration advice.
