How it works

Prepare your document, one step at a time.

Answer the questions, choose the download you need, then continue with signing or booking.

  1. 01

Transferring an off-road vehicle in Ontario

Under the Off-Road Vehicles Act, the seller removes the plate, completes the transfer section on the vehicle portion of the permit, including the date of delivery, and keeps the plate portion. The buyer then has six days to apply for a new permit.

Ontario does not require a Safety Standards Certificate for an off-road vehicle, and lists the Used Vehicle Information Package only for road vehicles such as cars, motor homes and motorcycles.

  2. 02

Sales tax on a used ATV or dirt bike

An off-road vehicle that needs a permit under the Off-Road Vehicles Act is a specified vehicle, so a private sale carries 13% retail sales tax on the purchase price, paid when the buyer registers it. An ATV with a carrying rack and an engine of 200 cc or more, used only in farming by a buyer with a farmer identification document, can be exempt.

A gift to a close family member can be exempt with Form 1157E, the Sworn Statement for a Family Gift, which the donor and the recipient both swear before a commissioner.

  3. 03

What an ATV bill of sale should include

Besides both parties' full names and addresses, the price, how it was paid and the date of sale, list:

    • The make, model, model year, colour and VIN or serial number, copied exactly from the permit if the vehicle has one.
    • The plate number, if the vehicle is plated.
    • Anything else included, such as a winch or a plow blade.
  4. 04

Notarizing an ATV or dirt bike bill of sale

Ontario's transfer steps for an off-road vehicle do not mention notarization.

If the buyer, the seller or a lender wants it sworn, leave the PDF unsigned: it ends with a solemn declaration that a commissioner can take online by video, under Ontario's remote commissioning rules (O. Reg. 431/20).

If you want a notary to witness the signatures instead, that is done in person, on a mobile visit where the notary comes to you anywhere in Ontario. Bring valid government-issued photo identification either way.
