  1. 01

    What SGI asks for

Bring one original proof of ownership to register the vehicle. A bill of sale should show:

    • The date of sale.
    • The buyer's name.
    • The year, make, model and VIN.
    • The price paid.
    • The seller's name, address and signature.
  2. 02

    Vehicles from outside Saskatchewan

A vehicle last registered outside Saskatchewan, or one written off as a total loss, needs an inspection as well as a bill of sale.

  3. 03

PST on a used vehicle bought privately

Saskatchewan's PST is 6%. A used vehicle bought privately for personal or farm use is exempt when it is worth $5,000 or less; above $5,000, PST applies to the full price. SGI uses the purchase price or the Red Book value, whichever is greater, for the $5,000 test, and a trade-in reduces the taxable amount.

A gift between close relatives, such as a spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent or in-law, is not taxable if Saskatchewan PST has been paid on the vehicle in full at least once. If it has not, the gift still qualifies when the donor has had the vehicle registered for at least 30 days. SGI's own Bill of Sale/Letter of Gift form covers a gift.

  4. 04

Notarizing a Saskatchewan bill of sale

SGI's courtesy sample bill of sale asks only for the seller's and the buyer's signatures.

If the buyer, the seller or a lender wants it sworn, leave the PDF unsigned: it ends with a solemn declaration that a commissioner can take online by video, under Ontario's remote commissioning rules (O. Reg. 431/20). Ask whoever will rely on it whether a declaration commissioned in Ontario suits them.

Frequently asked

Questions about the Saskatchewan Bill of Sale (Vehicle)

01
Do I need a bill of sale to register a vehicle in Saskatchewan?
You need one original proof of ownership: a bill of sale, a lease, or the Transfer of Ownership section of the Saskatchewan Certificate of Registration.
02
Does SGI have a bill of sale form?
Yes, a Bill of Sale/Letter of Gift sample that SGI provides as a courtesy. It also covers a gift.
03
Do I pay PST on a used vehicle bought privately in Saskatchewan?
For personal or farm use, only if it is worth more than $5,000, based on the purchase price or the Red Book value, whichever is greater. Above that, 6% PST applies to the full price.
04
Can I give a vehicle to family in Saskatchewan without PST?
Yes, between close relatives, if Saskatchewan PST has been paid on the vehicle in full at least once, or the donor has had it registered for at least 30 days.
05
Can I use my old plate on a vehicle I just bought in Saskatchewan?
Yes, for a short time. You have seven days from the date on the bill of sale to move your plate onto the replacement vehicle.
06
Does a Saskatchewan bill of sale need to be notarized?
No. A sworn declaration is extra, for a buyer, seller or lender who asks for one.
07
Can I fill in a Saskatchewan bill of sale online?
Yes. Type the details into the form on this page, then download the PDF and print it for signing.
