How it works

Prepare your document, one step at a time.

Answer the questions, choose the download you need, then continue with signing or booking.

  1. 01

Transferring a vehicle in Nova Scotia

The seller signs the back of the Certificate of Registration, completes Part 1, and signs and returns the Notice of Sale. The buyer completes Part 4, the Application for Certificate of Registration, which includes the tax declaration. Every blank space in Part 1 and Part 4 must be filled in.

Apply to register within 30 days of the purchase. The Registry of Motor Vehicles may ask to see the bill of sale at the counter.

  2. 02

Sales tax on a used vehicle

A used vehicle bought privately in Nova Scotia is subject to 14% sales tax on the purchase price or the Canadian Red Book value at the time of registration, whichever is greater. Motorcycles, motor homes, ATVs, snowmobiles, trailers and antique vehicles are taxed on the declared purchase price, which the Provincial Tax Commission reviews.

  3. 03

    Giving a vehicle to family

A gift to an immediate family member can be exempt with the Sworn Statement for a Family Gift of a Used Motor Vehicle, sworn before a barrister, commissioner or notary, or signed before Registry of Motor Vehicles staff. Claim it when you register; Nova Scotia gives no refund afterwards. One exempt gift per vehicle is allowed every 12 months.

  4. 04

Notarizing a Nova Scotia bill of sale

Nova Scotia's transfer steps do not mention notarizing the bill of sale itself.

If the buyer, the seller or a lender wants it sworn, leave the PDF unsigned: it ends with a solemn declaration that a commissioner can take online by video, under Ontario's remote commissioning rules (O. Reg. 431/20). Ask whoever will rely on it whether a declaration commissioned in Ontario suits them.
