About this document

Motorhome or trailer: what ServiceOntario needs
A self-propelled motor home is a motor vehicle. The seller gives the buyer a Used Vehicle Information Package and the signed permit, the buyer needs a Safety Standards Certificate to plate it, and the buyer registers it within six days.
A travel trailer or fifth wheel is a trailer. It is registered only once, for $72, and its TRAILER plate carries no sticker because the registration does not expire. For a used trailer already registered in Ontario, bring the vehicle portion of the permit, a bill of sale and your ID. For one from outside Ontario, bring the original registration or title, the original bill of sale, and an empty weigh slip if the trailer is over 900 kg. A trailer needs no safety certificate.
- 02
Sales tax on a used RV
Motorhomes, travel trailers and fifth wheels are specified vehicles, so a private sale carries 13% retail sales tax on the purchase price, paid when the buyer registers the RV. Buy from a dealer that charges HST and you pay the HST to the dealer instead. A mobile home is not a specified vehicle.
A gift to a close family member can be exempt with Form 1157E, the Sworn Statement for a Family Gift, which the donor and the recipient both swear before a commissioner.
- 03
What an RV bill of sale should include
Besides both parties' full names and addresses, the price, how it was paid and the date of sale, list these, copied exactly from the permit:
- The type of RV, its make, model, model year, colour and VIN.
- For a motorhome, its power source and odometer reading.
- The plate number.
- Anything else included, such as an awning, a hitch or a generator.

Notarizing an RV bill of sale
ServiceOntario accepts a handwritten bill of sale and does not ask for it to be notarized.
If the buyer, the seller or a lender wants it sworn, leave the PDF unsigned: it ends with a solemn declaration that a commissioner can take online by video, under Ontario's remote commissioning rules (O. Reg. 431/20).
If you want a notary to witness the signatures instead, that is done in person, on a mobile visit where the notary comes to you anywhere in Ontario. Bring valid government-issued photo identification either way.
