Overview
A statutory declaration of rent paid — also called a proof of rent declaration or rent paid affidavit — is a sworn statement confirming the rental unit, your landlord, and the total rent you paid for a given period.
It is the standard solution when a landlord will not issue rent receipts but you still need to prove what you paid, sworn before a notary public or commissioner for taking affidavits.
A sworn rent paid declaration is commonly requested for tax credits and benefit programs that depend on rent.
State the rental address, your landlord or property owner, the period the rent covers, the total amount paid, and the monthly rent where it applies. Keep any bank records, e-transfers, or cancelled cheques that back up the amounts.
A declaration supports your claim, but the tax authority or program decides under its own rules and may ask for additional records, so be accurate and keep your proof.
Once you have filled in your statutory declaration of rent paid and downloaded the PDF, do not sign it yet. An affidavit or statutory declaration must be signed in the presence of a notary public or a commissioner for taking affidavits, who administers your oath or solemn affirmation before you sign.
Minute Notary commissions your statutory declaration of rent paid either online by secure video, under Ontario's remote commissioning rules (O. Reg. 431/20), or in person in Ottawa. Bring valid government-issued photo identification so we can confirm who you are before we apply the notary seal.
