Property, Vehicles & Ownership

Documents about what you own, buy, sell, or let someone else use — including the ServiceOntario sworn statements a used-vehicle transfer needs. A family gift of a used vehicle is sworn by both the donor and the recipient on one form, which is two seals.

Overview

When you might need one

Two forms drive almost every private vehicle transfer in Ontario. Form 1157E is the sworn statement for a gift between eligible family members, signed by both the giver and the recipient, and it is what waives the 13% retail sales tax at the ServiceOntario counter. Form 1155E is the sworn statement for the other tax-exempt transfers — an estate, a separation settlement, a corporate reorganization. A bill of sale records the price and date of an ordinary sale and travels with the Used Vehicle Information Package the seller must provide.

The sworn statements are commissioned online by video and returned as a PDF ServiceOntario accepts; the buyer then has six days to register the vehicle. Property documents beyond vehicles — declarations of ownership, a lost permit, a lost cheque — follow the same pattern: fill in the free template, show ID, and sign in front of the notary.

  • 01Transferring or gifting a used vehicle and supporting the retail sales tax exemption
  • 02Recording a private sale with a bill of sale
  • 03Swearing to ownership when a permit, cheque, or title document is lost
