When you might need one
Two documents dominate this group. A child travel consent letter is recommended, not legally required in Canada; border officers and airlines ask for it when a child travels with one parent, a relative, or a group, and it is prepared online and then signed and witnessed the way the airline and the destination expect. An invitation letter for a visitor visa states who you are inviting, for how long, and who pays; it supports the application without deciding it.
IRCC’s own declarations — common-law union, a lost document, a translator’s affidavit — are declared on the department’s form and commissioned online by video under O. Reg. 431/20. Passport Canada’s declaration in lieu of a guarantor works the same way. Keep the receiving office’s instructions beside you as you fill in the template: the wording it asks for wins over the wording here.
