What is a sole-custody travel consent letter?
It is a sworn consent letter allowing a child to travel, signed by the one parent or guardian who holds decision-making responsibility.
Unlike the standard two-parent letter, it explains why the second parent has not signed — a court order, the other parent's death, or the absence of any other person with decision-making authority.

When you might need one
Use this version rather than the standard letter when:
- A court order gives you sole decision-making responsibility.
- The child's other parent has died.
- You are the child's sole legal guardian and no other parent is on record.
- An airline or border service has asked why only one parent has consented.

What you'll need to fill it in
Have the following ready:
- The child's full name and date of birth as they appear on the passport.
- Destination, travel dates, and the address where the child will stay.
- The name and relationship of the accompanying adult, if any.
- The document establishing your sole authority — bring it to the appointment.

Bring your supporting documents to the border
The consent letter is stronger when it travels with the evidence behind it. Carry a copy of the court order or death certificate referred to in the declaration alongside the notarized letter, and keep the originals available. Officers assessing a single-parent consent generally want to see both.

Questions about the Consent to Travel for a Minor Child (Sole Custody)
- Is a travel consent letter legally required?
- It is not mandatory under Canadian law, but the Government of Canada strongly recommends one for any child travelling without both parents, and border officers in many countries ask for it.
- Does the letter have to be notarized?
- Notarization is not strictly required, but it is strongly recommended: a notarized letter is far less likely to be questioned, and some countries expect it.
- What if there is no court order but the other parent is absent?
- Describe the actual circumstances truthfully in the basis field. Do not claim a court order that does not exist. If the other parent has decision-making responsibility in law, their consent may still be needed.
