What is a two-parent travel consent letter?
It is a sworn letter in which both parents or guardians confirm that a child may travel, and name the adult who will be responsible for the child during the trip.
Because both people with decision-making responsibility have signed, it is the strongest form of travel consent a family can carry.

When you might need one
Border officers commonly ask for this letter when:
- A child travels abroad with a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or family friend.
- A child travels with a school, sports, or religious group.
- A child travels with only one parent while both hold decision-making responsibility.
- A child travels alone as an unaccompanied minor.

What you'll need to fill it in
Have the following ready:
- Full names, addresses, and contact details for both parents or guardians.
- The child's full name and date of birth as printed on the passport.
- The accompanying adult's full name, relationship, and address.
- Destination, travel dates, and the address where the child will stay.

If both parents cannot attend together
Each parent may swear a separate counterpart of the same letter in front of a notary, and the two signed copies travel together. This is common where parents live apart or one is out of the country, and it does not weaken the consent.

- Do both parents have to sign?
- Where both hold decision-making responsibility, yes — a letter signed by only one of them invites questions. If you alone hold that responsibility, use the sole-custody version of this letter instead.
- Do both parents need to be at the same appointment?
- No. Each parent can swear their own counterpart of the letter before a notary and the copies can be carried together.
- How long is the letter valid?
- It covers the trip and dates it names. A new letter is needed for a new trip, so keep the travel dates accurate rather than open-ended.
