What is a joint affidavit?
It is a single affidavit sworn by two deponents at the same time. Both people state the same facts, both swear or affirm that those facts are true, and both sign the document in the presence of the notary.
It replaces two separate affidavits when the receiving organization wants one document confirming a shared fact — that two people live together, are the parents of the same child, or jointly own something.

When you might need one
A joint affidavit is appropriate whenever the facts belong to both people equally.
- Two partners confirming a common-law relationship.
- Two parents confirming the particulars of a child.
- Two business partners confirming a shared transaction or holding.
- Any organization that asks for one signed statement from both people.

Good to know
Both deponents must attend the appointment. Each presents valid government-issued photo identification, each takes the oath or affirmation, and each signs. If only one person can attend, use a single-deponent affidavit instead.
State only facts you both know to be true. Where a fact is true for one of you and not the other, it belongs in a separate affidavit.

How to notarize a joint affidavit in Ontario
After you fill in the joint affidavit and download the PDF, do not sign it in advance. A sworn document must be signed in front of a notary public or commissioner for taking affidavits, who administers the oath or affirmation first.

- Can two people swear one affidavit together?
- Yes. Both deponents swear the same facts and both sign in front of the notary. Each pays for their own seal.
- Do both people have to attend the appointment?
- Yes. Every deponent must take the oath or affirmation and sign in the notary’s presence, whether online by video or in person.
- What if a fact is only true for one of us?
- Leave it out. A joint affidavit should contain only facts both deponents can swear to. Anything personal to one of you belongs in a separate affidavit.
