Students & OSAP

The sworn statements OSAP and other student-aid programs ask for when a situation does not fit the online application, and the declarations a school board, college or university wants about status, residence or support. Each one is sworn before a commissioner, usually the same day, online.

Statutory declarations

Overview

When you might need one

OSAP accepts a sworn declaration where its application cannot verify a fact: a marital or common-law status, sole-support parent status, income earned abroad or not taxed in Canada. The financial-aid office says which statement it needs and when; the wording here follows what those offices ask for. A school board that needs proof of residence, or a college that wants a sponsor's support confirmed, sets its own rules — read them before you fill anything in.

Students usually commission the declaration online by video, which suits a campus schedule and a deadline that is days away. Have the supporting document ready to show on the call — the tax slip, the lease, the letter from the program — and sign only when the commissioner asks. OSAP accepts a declaration commissioned by video under O. Reg. 431/20; an institution with its own form will say so on the form.

  • 01Declaring marital, common-law or sole-support parent status for OSAP
  • 02Reporting foreign or non-taxable income for yourself, a parent or a spouse
  • 03Confirming full-time status, where a student lives, or the support a sponsor provides
