Overview

When you might need one

Two sworn statements drive almost every private vehicle transfer in Ontario. Form 1157E is the sworn statement for a gift between eligible family members, signed by both the giver and the recipient, and it is what waives the 13% retail sales tax at the ServiceOntario counter. The sworn statement for the transfer of a used motor vehicle covers the other exempt transfers — an estate, a separation settlement, a corporate reorganization. A bill of sale records the price and the date of an ordinary sale and travels with the Used Vehicle Information Package the seller must provide.

The sworn statements are commissioned online by video under O. Reg. 431/20 and returned as a sealed PDF to bring to ServiceOntario, where the buyer has six days to register the vehicle. ServiceOntario and the Ministry of Transportation publish the official forms; where a form is prescribed, use theirs and treat the template here as a guide to the facts you will swear. A bill of sale itself is not sworn — a notary witnesses it in person if the buyer or an insurer asks for a witnessed signature.

  • 01Recording a private sale of a car, boat, trailer, motorcycle or snowmobile with a bill of sale
  • 02Gifting a used vehicle to a family member and claiming the retail sales tax exemption on Form 1157E
  • 03Replacing a lost vehicle permit or requesting a Registrant Identification Number
